Description
The Appian Way and catacombs tour from Rome starts with a ride out of the centre in a private air-conditioned minibus, with an English-speaking guide and a group capped at 18 guests. Out here the city thins into one of the oldest roads the Romans built.
You walk on paving laid centuries ago, the same stones once used by legions and merchants, past tombs and ruins that mark how Rome grew. One stop is the Mausoleum of Cecilia Metella, a round tomb from the first century BCE, seen from the outside. Another puts you under the arches of the aqueducts that once brought fresh water to the city.
The final visit is underground, in one of two catacombs, San Sebastiano or Domitilla, which one changes with the day. You enter at closing time, as the last visitors, so the tunnels with their frescoes and early Christian burials are quiet.

Shoulders and knees must be covered. Narrow tunnels may bother anyone claustrophobic, and the tour is not suited to wheelchairs or strollers. The Colosseum option requires every guest to give their full name when booking and to bring government ID.
