Rome beckons travelers for countless reasons, but few experiences are as profoundly moving as a visit to the Holy Steps and the Arch-Basilica of St. John Lateran (San Giovanni in Italian). Join us on an unforgettable journey to Rome's Cathedral, the "Holy of Holies," and the Scala Sancta, where a knowledgeable guide will illuminate the captivating history of the Catholic Church. Imagine ascending the very steps that Jesus Christ walked on his way to trial and condemnation by Pontius Pilate! These steps, originally from the Praetorium in Roman Judea, were brought to Rome in the 4th century by St. Helena, along with other relics of Christ's Passion. According to Catholic tradition, pilgrims climb these steps on their knees in prayer, seeking a Plenary Indulgence. While this deeply personal act of devotion takes approximately 45 minutes and isn't part of our guided experience, you're welcome to partake in it independently, free of charge. Our tour focuses on visiting the Holy Steps and the Church of the Scala Sancta. Here, we'll discover the Sancta Sanctorum – the "Holy of Holies" – a small chapel once reserved solely for the Pope. We'll ascend the adjacent staircase to peer into this sacred space, catching a glimpse of the miraculous acheiropoieta of Christ – an image said to have been started by St. Luke the Evangelist and completed by angels! This chapel also safeguards wood believed to be from the table of the Last Supper. Next, we'll cross the road to the Arch-Basilica of St. John Lateran, the highest-ranking church in Christendom. Here, we'll have the opportunity to venerate the skulls of Saints Peter and Paul, the cornerstones of the Church. As a UNESCO World Heritage site, San Giovanni is an architectural marvel, a basilica of awe-inspiring grandeur. Its history is intertwined with the legalization of Christianity within the Roman Empire, and its walls hold priceless art and mosaics rich in symbolism. The Cathedral has witnessed a fascinating, often turbulent, past. Notably, it's also home to one of the four Holy Doors, set to open in 2025 for pilgrims visiting Rome. Our tour concludes as we admire the Basilica of St. John Lateran's magnificent facade. From here, you'll find yourself conveniently located near public transport, taxis, and the ancient Aurelian Walls that encircle the historic center, leading beyond to the modern city.
