Description
Ancient Rome makes more sense with someone telling its stories, and this Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill guided tour does it in one walk. You start at the amphitheatre with special access, hear how it was built and why people still call it an engineering marvel. The numbers carved over each archway are worth a look on your way in.
Your guide leads you around the first and second levels of the amphitheatre, through tales of emperors, gladiators and famous battles. The underground is not part of this route.
Then you walk on, passing the Arch of Constantine as the legend of Romulus and Remus is told. Inside the Roman Forum you see:
- the Arch of Titus
- the home of the Vestal Virgins
- the spot where Julius Caesar was buried, on land that was once swamp
The finish is Palatine Hill, with the ruins of the imperial palaces from which emperors ruled. Tickets for all sites and hearing devices are included. Expect two and a half to three hours. The tour runs in rain or shine, security checks can be slow at peak times, and toilets are limited, so use one beforehand.
