Description
With a Mamertine Prison ticket and audio guide you step into the Carcer Tullianum, the place where ancient Rome kept its enemies, and from which they did not come out alive. The visit is self-guided: you walk the dim halls alone and listen to the multimedia guide as you go.
The stories are strong ones. Here Jugurtha, king of Numidia, and Vercingetorix, the Gaulish leader beaten by Julius Caesar, spent their last days, and here the followers of Catiline met their end. Tradition also says that Peter and Paul were held in the prison, as were many other Christian martyrs, which adds a second layer of history to the same few rooms.
- Entry to the Carcer Tullianum
- Audio guide in six languages: Italian, English, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese
To listen you need the Vatican & Rome app, which you download from the App Store or Play Store. Transport and a live guide are not part of the ticket.
