Description
The St Peter's Basilica dome ticket with Papal Tombs is one pre-booked visit in three parts: the church, the dome and the tombs underneath. A host meets you, helps with the entry and accompanies you to the dome entrance. After that you explore alone, with a digital audio guide in 15 languages that you play on your own phone.
In the basilica, Michelangelo's Pietà and Bernini's Baldachin come with the stories behind them. Then you go up: by stairs from the base, or part of the way by lift if your ticket includes it. The climb passes close to the mosaics of the dome and ends at the highest point of Vatican City, with views over St. Peter's Square, the Vatican Gardens and the Tiber. Back down, the Papal Tombs beneath the basilica are the quiet last stop, where many popes, among them John Paul II, are buried.
