Description

The church of Santa Maria della Pace was built under Sisto IV’s papacy around 1480, and is attributed to the creativity of Baccio Pontelli. It is the result of the union of two elements: a rectangular room in the front part, followed by an octagonal dome added by Bramante.

In 1656 Pietro da Cortona restored the church made by order of Pope Alessandro VII, and on this occasion he added the Baroque convex façade, preceded by a semi-rounded pronaus with Dorian columns that surround the small front square with an admirable scenic solution.

In the first part, the interior consists of a short double spanned nave with cross vaults, which keeps intact the fifteen-century structure. In this area of the church one can admire the famous "sibille", painted by Raffaello by order of the Senese banker Agostino Chigi in1514.

Not to be missed out the cloister, first work in Rome for Bramante.
