Description
Piazza del Colosseo is a square located between Via dei Fori Imperiali and Via Claudia, in Rome, in the Monti, Campitelli and Celio districts.
The square takes its name from the famous monument located at its center, the Colosseum or Flavian Amphitheatre; it covers the area of the ancient stagnum of Nero's Domus Aurea.
In ancient times, the colossal statue of Nero stood here, now remembered by a square paved area and an inscription. A similar area, but circular, paved with cobblestones and granite slabs, and with an inscription inserted in the center of the asphalt, commemorates the site of the Meta Sudans.
